After reading the "Market Segment" article, each team member should choose a city from any region of China below and do some basic web research on it.

Describe and highlight main characteristics of that city to be taken in consideration for entering that particular area with a new US retail concept.

The south of china represents China's growth market. Beijing is a popular city in the south of China and an attractive place for a new US retail concept. It is where the 2008 Olympics were held. Also Beijing has more economic development and has consumers who are much more affluent than other provinces of China. This regional economy was the first to attract foreign investment with its four original special economic zones (SEZs), and become the most outward-oriented. In recent years, it has embarked on transforming itself from
labor-intensive operations to high tech manufacturing.

Shanghai, located in the east of china, is the most densely populated and highly urbanized city, being the industrial and financial center of China. Because of its cosmopolitan characteistics, affluent consumers with sophisticated tastes, and the most educated skilled labor force of the country, makes the city very attractive to foreign investors. Shanghai's population is very innovative and they are the ones that set the trends that later on expand to other regions, so it is an attractive market for a new US retail concept, because if it gains a name and has a lot of demand there, it will give an advantage for the retail concept to expand to the other less develped cities.
